Access permissions grant digital workplace users a role with the ability to perform specific actions on the digital workplace, such as sites, feeds, pages, content, files, digital workplace configuration settings, and more. If a role does not have a specific access permission, groups with that role can't take the action defined by the access permission.

Use access permissions
When browsing the digital workplace, access permissions are seamless. If you don't have access to content, pages, or sites, they are not visible to you in the Top Bar's menu or search results in the Search Results page.
If you encounter an error message stating, "Access denied. Sorry, you do not have permission to access this Page," when looking at content, pages, or sites, you should contact your workplace administrator to get your access permissions updated so that you can see it.
Configure access permissions
Access permissions are divided into two different categories: workplace and file manager roles. Workplace roles govern most access in the digital workplace, while file manager roles only govern the files and folders stored inside the File Manager.
Workplace roles
As a workplace administrator, you can assign and remove access permissions by groups on a site-by-site basis via the Site Manager page, allowing you to manage how users access and use the site quickly. The reader, creator, and site administrator workplace roles can be assigned using this method.
For instructions on assigning access permissions, see Assign or edit access permissions for a site and Remove access permissions for a site.
Keep in mind that:
- Digital workplace access: To access pages and content in the digital workplace, a user must be in a group with an assigned role for the root directory (i.e., top location in the site structure, which may be named Home) in the Site Manager.
- Site access: A group must be assigned a role for a site to allow the group's users to interact with it. Subsites do not automatically inherit access permissions from sites above them in the site hierarchy.
Additionally, as a workplace administrator, you can assign the workplace administrator role to other users to give them full access permissions to the entire digital workplace via the Workplace Administrators page.
File manager roles
File manager roles only apply to the files and folders in the File Manager. Files and folders are not governed by workplace roles, except that users with the workplace administrator workplace role have the same access permissions as the full or owner file manager roles.
For instructions on assigning access permissions for files and folders, see Assign or edit access permissions for a file or folder or Remove access permissions for a file or folder.
When managing access permissions, keep in mind that:
- Inheritance: Unlike the Site Manager's access model, files and folders in the File Manager can inherit their access permissions from the folder containing them.
- Roles: For more information on the different roles in the File Manager, see the Role article.
